Our Brand Story
Amka® Luggage was founded by a husband and wife team who shared a passion for travel and a vision to shake up the luggage industry.
James and Kate Wilson had a lightbulb moment on a trip to Paris in 2018. While struggling through the metro and cobblestone streets with their bulky black suitcases, they observed chic Parisians effortlessly maneuvering sleek luggage in fun prints and colors. It made them realize just how dull, cumbersome and overly masculine most luggage looked.
They saw an opportunity to reinvent luggage with a focus on fashion, femininity and affordability. Once home, James and Kate began researching materials, sketching designs and sourcing factories. In 2019, Amka® Luggage was born.
The name Amka comes from a Hebrew word meaning “strength and power.” This represents our commitment to creating luggage that’s both durable for travel and empowering in its stylish design. The Amka® Luggage brand is all about strength through style.
Our founders have an entrepreneurial spirit and passion for helping others. James previously worked in pharmaceutical sales and Kate was an elementary school teacher. Together, they bring a mix of business savvy and creativity. Their goal is to make travel more fun and stylish for all by providing quality luggage at accessible price points.
James and Kate oversee every aspect of the business themselves – from initial sketches to final products. Our Design Process
Amka® Luggage collections begin as sketches on a drawing board. Our design team, led by co-founder Kate Wilson, starts by researching the latest fashion and travel trends. They pick out patterns, textures and colors that will be stylish for the upcoming season.
Next, Kate works closely with our product development team to bring the designs to life. They select premium quality materials in luxe metallic finishes, 3D textures, animal prints and bold colors.
Every bag silhouette is carefully crafted to be fashionable yet highly functional. The team considers how to incorporate smart features like laundry bags, expansion zippers, USB ports and interior organizing compartments. They ensure the proportions, shapes and sizes suit both fashion and travel needs.
For softside bags, we use custom-designed Amka® prints like polka dots, abstract stripes and romantic florals. Our logo jacquard fabric in navy blue and tan adds signature style. For hardside suitcases, the focus is on glossy, scratch-resistant textures and metallic finishes.
